Portage County school certificate, 1858 November 10.

Consists of a Portage County school certificate issued to H.D. Carlton for the period of twenty-four months. Certificate includes the student's marks in reading, writing, arithmetic, grammar, and geography and states the examiners' belief that "he sustains a good Moral Character." The document is signed by J.A. Garfield and H.W. Bristol, Board of School Examiners, Hiram, Ohio, 10 November 1858.

James Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1831.
